In the past couple of weeks, I’ve been lucky enough to take a couple weekend trips back down South to soak up some sunshine and escape the cold and stress of the city. My first stop? Miami! To be honest, this trip had me seeing a different side of the sunshine state and the flavorful city down South. It’s funny since I’m actually from Florida, but the weekend exposed me to a new view of my home state.

First of all, Miami has grown so much in recent years. Jason and I stayed at the Ritz-Carlton in Coconut Grove, where we enjoyed relaxing afternoons by the pool. But in the evenings, we were close enough to hit South Beach, The Design District, and enjoy the city’s new architecture, restaurants, and shopping. We ate at our favorite modern Italian restaurant, Cecconi’s, at Soho Beach House and enjoyed a “Letters to Andy Warhol” exhibit during our last night in Florida. It was the perfect evening and perfect trip!

We also welcomed the escape from New York, because I was able to break out some summer-wear and put my over-the-knee boots away in favor of sexy sandals. During the day, I basically LIVED in this new black off-the-shoulder dress with a smocked top. The a-line cut made it super comfortable, while bare shoulders and bell sleeves kept it undeniably on-trend. I wore the dress with strappy nude sandals, and 70’s inspired details including my “Faye” bag and favorite hoop necklace. The fabric is so easy and breezy, I also threw it on over my swimsuit when heading to the pool the next day! The best part? The dress is only $59!! Can you believe it? I love that I can dress this up for a summertime evening event with some tall strappy sandals – or down with oversized sunnies and gladiators. This one is bound to be a staple in my closet once the weather gets warm again in NYC. Until then….we’ll always have Miami.

Happy Pre-Friday Dolls! How was everyone’s Valentine’s Day? Jason spoiled me with my favorite gift of shoes (he got shoes too), home cooked meals, and a late-night trip to the movies to see 50 Shades Darker. I was so shocked and appreciative that he actually opted in to seeing a cheesy movie, but we had the absolute best time. Plus I’m all about that white-cherry icee life.

Since we started our relationship as long distance, date nights have always been really special to us. Even now, with working such busy schedules it’s nice to put aside time to do something special together. Most days, I’m in a casual dress with low-key makeup and hair going wild with a mind of it’s own. But for date night…I try to turn up the glam and put a little more time into my wardrobe and beauty regime. Enter my not-so-secret hair weapon, the Sapphire Curling Wand from Irresistible Me. I know I posted about this last week (see it here), but I wanted to share the photos of my hair curled to perfection.

I will admit, it takes a minute to get used to the wand technique – having been a traditional curling iron girl for so long. But since I’ve gotten the hang of it, the wand has become my hair’s new best friend. It comes with a heat-resistant glove to protect you from burns, which I love. My mom says I’m accident prone, so this is a big plus for me! My favorite thing about the wand is the variety of attachments that help you achieve different types of curls. Not to mention the sleek design, beautiful packaging, travel case, AND the auto-shut-off feature…I’m in love. So I used the wand for a recent date with Jason and had my tresses curled to perfection, which was the perfect accessory to my navy and black Zimmermann jumpsuit and new Iro leather jacket. The curls lasted for days and stayed frizz-free. The best part? My polished hair made me feel super confident and sexy for our special date. And in the end, isn’t confidence the key to any look?

So you’re probably thinking that the photos above look a tad bit different than what I usually post. That’s because this shoot was styled and photographed by my incredibly talented friend, Jacque Lombardo.  Jacque and I met on her first day at our advertising agency and we soon found mutual comfort and joy in each other, despite both being assigned to a horrible project.  I’d like to think it was fate! And to be quite honest, Jacque had an instrumental role in helping me get started with this blog – so I’ll forever be in her debt and appreciate her unparalleled kindness and expertise.  Jacque was also the one who shot the first couple of looks for Brown Paper Doll before Jason took over the photography reins.

Recently, she mentioned she wanted to shoot me again, this time to create something more editorial. I told her to do whatever she wanted, and I was on board! For this shoot, we chose a formal Veronica Beard gown, my navy faux-fur stole, simple nude sandals and my new favorite earrings, designed locally in NYC.

While this hair and makeup definitely isn’t an everyday look for me, I thought it was great to be pushed out of my comfort zone and experience a different side of fashion and photography.  Actually, I felt like I was in an episode of America’s Next Top Model where the girls get styled for a high-fashion shoot! While I’m no model, I did my best in Central Park and felt like the setting was perfect to highlight the bronzy, nude tone of the dress.  And I’m pretty proud of us, because believe me when I say this was probably the coldest day of the year in New York! Brrrr!  Despite being reserved for formal occasions, I feel like the gown is a great addition to my wardrobe, as it’s glamorous but simple enough to be in style for years to come.

While Jacque and I don’t work together anymore, it was great to collaborate on this fun shoot.  So thanks for pushing me out of box and into the park…freezing as it may have been!
