What Am I Going To Wear Today

what-am-I-going-to-wear-today

“…But I have nothing to wear.”

We’ve all said it, and we’ve all heard it. It’s a commonplace fashion conundrum – feeling like you’ve got nothing to wear when your closet is chock-full of clothes. It can strike before a big event, a night on the town, or commonly in the morning before heading to work.

As a self-proclaimed NOT morning person, I wake up and race the clock to get to work on time. My morning routine includes reading The Skimm, browsing through Instagram (duh!), and general procrastination. Then it’s time for hair, makeup and the whole grooming shabang. This leaves little to no time to waffle about what I’m wearing to work. Because of my routine and tendency to run late, I’ve come up with a little ritual that rarely has me wondering about my outfits. Reading closely? Because I’ve shared my secret with very few people! Ok here goes….

I actually pick out ALL of the week’s outfits in advance on Sunday evening. It might sound time consuming or over the top, but let me tell you…it’s worth it! I simply take a look at the week’s weather and go from there. For example… Cool on Monday? Maybe it’s time to break out a cashmere sweater and a studded pair of jeans. Now that I know I’m wearing jeans on Monday, perhaps I’ll go for a skirt or dress on Tuesday. Am I wearing heels early in the week? Then I add some variety with a cool and casual sneaker look. Planning out my outfits gets me in a creative mode where I’m willing to try things on, experiment a little and see the week’s looks through a wider lens. This way, I’m able to add more variety to each wardrobe, and not just reach for the same pair of shoes or jacket every day because they’re handy.

The borderline OCD kicker to my routine? I hang the outfits on a hanger in the order I’ll wear them…starting with Friday and then working backwards so that Monday is right on top and ready for me to grab in the morning. Of course, there is always flexibility for when inspiration strikes, weather changes, or when I simply change my mind! But overall, this routine helps my outfits stay fresh and creative, while keeping me on time for those morning meetings!

So what do you dolls think? Would you try this method to eliminate the closet conundrum? Do you do something similar? Or do you prefer to play it by ear?

So the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale was a couple of weeks ago. Did you dolls take advantage?

What I love about Nordstrom is that not only do thy carry the designer brands we all know and love – Tibi, Rag & Bone, etc… But they also have contemporary and affordable lines that are great for adding basics AND flair to your wardrobe? Remember that wrap top I wore recently and am obsessed with? Scooped that up at Nordstrom!

My other fav Nordstrom buy as of late – a simple and versatile white sundress that’s as comfortable as it is cute! It’s a stretch fabric that is easy to throw on, and the midi-length is just what I’m craving as Summer is winding down. I’ve been styling this dress with colorful mules, and my denim jacket – but you could also dress it up with a silk bomber, long duster coat, or just go bare-shouldered in the sunshine! Funny thing about this dress….when my mom saw it, she was so obsessed she actually took it out of my closet! I had to order a second one for myself. And with a price tag of only $41.40 – I didn’t feel guilty at all. Yep, you read right… less than $50! I highly recommend this dress as a staple for your wardrobe! Let me know what you dolls think in the comments below!

Savvy Southern Style vs. Street Style Chic

So I’m only a couple months into reclaiming my “Atlantan” status, but I think the move has already had an impact on my style. In New York, I rocked Street Style Chic and my shoes were focused on comfort for the mile-long walk to work.  Now, I’m adopting what I like to call my Savvy Southern Style. This means going back to my heels EVERY DAY, because my walk is simply home to parking garage to office and back again (trading the A-Train for the HOV lane!).

I find my outfits are more put together at home, because I’m less worried about getting messed up in transit. The biggest change I’ve seen? I’m returning back to my colorful roots!

Savvy Southern Style

Savvy Southern Style is all about color, volume, polish…and above all a playful attitude. No one can rock pearls, a blowout and a sundress better than my Southern ladies, am I right? But there’s something to be said for the New York state of mind and a level of chicness and edge that my ladies up North bring to the table.

What are some of the differences?

Dresses vs. Jeans

I think my go-to look in New York was a pair of ripped or embroidered jeans and a blouse or t-shirt/blazer combo. Now I’m experimenting with more playful looks like bright dresses and full skirts.  Still, sometimes I do both like this, combining an edgier jacket with a flowy black ruffled southern dress.

Shoes

Before, I’d rock trendy sneakers and chunky heels to keep me looking cute for the commute through the workday. Now, I’m all about my stilettos and lush fabrics that I don’t have to fear about being ruined by the elements.

Outerwear

Fall/Winter hasn’t hit yet, but now that I’m down South I’m pretty sure I’ll be ditching my Canada Goose for more practical (and less expensive) topcoats and lighter jackets. I can’t wait to wear my Rag & Bone coat more this year, but maybe also grab some new colorful coats, perhaps a shade of bubblegum or mustard – this one’s only $30 btw!

Beauty

In New York my nails would consistently be a black, navy, or white and I’d rock a muted rose lip. Now? I’m rocking pink nails and exploiting my bff who works at Tom Ford to get me every shade of lipstick under the sun!

So where am I on the Savvy Southern Style – Street Style Chic spectrum? I’m still finding my place somewhere in between, but I’ve definitely noticed a change in what I reach for in my closet. I hope you dolls continue to follow along as I explore what this new stage means for my wardrobe!
